On December 21 at 5:03 PM CST the Winter or December Solstice will occur. This is the day when winter officially begins in the Northern hemisphere and summer begins in the Southern hemisphere. The Sun will also reach its southernmost celestial latitude. Although the exact date for the earliest sunset or earliest sunrise will actually vary by latitude, but for the most part this will be the shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day and shortest night in the Southern.
